Some evidence supporting the protective effect from the SNP rs1129844 has emerged. Specifically, Colombian carriers of the E280A PS1 mutation are almost assured of developing early onset AD, yet, even among this group, some have been found to develop AD ten years later than would be expected. Evidence suggests that the SNP rs1129844 in the eotaxin-1 (also called CCL11) might provide protection against AD.

This was first demonstrated in over 100 members of the Colombian cohort through whole genome sequencing. Confirmation was obtained in a sample of over 150 AD patients.
